Quick answer – It is a day procedure performed under full anaesthetic.

Long answer - The cat is fasted from 8 pm the night before surgery. They can have water until about 7 am on the morning of surgery. You drop him into us the morning when he is booked in for the operation. He will be examined before we begin. The surgery to remove both testicles is performed under a full anaesthetic. A tattoo will be placed in one ear to indicate that he is desexed. This is a legislative requirement. Late in the afternoon, providing he is fully awake, your cat will be sent home. Male cats with a routine castration will not have any sutures after the surgery.

Providing a cat is in good health it can be castrated at any age after 3 months of age but the usual recommendation is to desex your cat at approx 6 months of age.

Included in the cost of castration is a pre-surgery examination, full anaesthetic, pain relief and surgery. An additional cost would be a pre-anaesthetic blood test which is optional.
