Our Hendra Policy

OUR HENDRA POLICY

Due to the recent Hendra virus case in the Scenic rim, the staff at Hoof n Paws and Veresdale Equine Veterinary Services would like to reiterate our current Hendra Policy.

On the 1st of January 2016 the clinic introduced a protocol in which our vets will not attend unwell horses that are not up to date with their Hendra vaccinations. The vaccination status of horses will be checked on the Health4Horses registry before the vet will attend. The vets will see sick horses that are up to date with their Hendra vaccinations. Vets will perform routine consults on healthy, unvaccinated horses; however we strongly recommend that horses are vaccinated for Hendra virus. As a clinic, we have decided to implement this policy due to safety and insurance.

If your horse is unwell and not vaccinated for Hendra virus, please take precautions. These precautions include ensuring sound hygiene and biosecurity measures. Avoid close contact with the sick horse and other horses that have been in contact with it. Wait until a veterinarian has assessed the horse and provided advice.

To check if a horse is up to date with its Hendra virus vaccinations, please follow this link: https://www.health4horses.com.au/About/Hendra-Vaccination-Lookup/
